I've read that MTF is used a lot in the rifle scope industry, but I'm not sure how true that is or even if MTF is the most important thing to optimize for.Īll design programs have the ability to optimize merit functions. Other than Zemax what optics software has this capability? ![]() Obviously this isnt the most sophisticated form of optimization, and I'd like to check my results against more reliable software (since mine was hand coded and not guaranteed to be bug free) and run optimizations for more relevant/useful merit functions. ![]() The idea is that larger f-ratios tend to produce better images. I've built my own poormans zemax in google sheets but the only optimizing it solves for is kind of primitive basically it solves for the largest possible F-ratios that will meet the given criteria. I may or may not have access to Zemax through my university (I wont know until after the holidays) but while I'm figuring that out I wanted to check and see if there were other software alternatives that offer this feature, like OSLO or SYNOPSYS (both of which have free limited-use versions). and then have the program solve for the optical system that produces the best possible image according to whatever merit function you've selected. ![]() So I know in Zemax theres an optimzer utility where you can set certain constraints - like FoV, eye relief, number of lenses, etc. ![]()
